The Power of Speaking up!

My grandmother, Gertrude Thomas, is the first and only black woman in my personal life who talked about infertility publicly. I was just a little girl when she would give her testimony in church, but I remember it vividly. She’d say something like this, “Down through the years, the Lord has been good to me. He gave me five beautiful daughters and several grands when the doctor said I’d never have kids.” Then she’d throw her head back and wave her arms in the air, shouting, “Thank you, Father!” I always wondered why she gave her testimony again and again to the same old faces. Little did I know, her words were not meant to stay in that time or place. It was a guide for the future, some thirty years later.

Thank you, Grandma, for speaking up. You are forever in my heart.
